Funchal, on the island of Madeira, is part of Portugal. It is located at 32 degrees N and 17 degrees W, 520 km off the coast of Africa. Fun fact: The name, Funchal, is derived from the word for “fennel”.
We docked near the USS Gravely, a destroyer.
Our stay was short; we docked at noon and sailed for Lisbon at 10 p.m. Rather than take an excursion, Bill and I explored the waterfront.
