Broken Arrow - submarine rock

The Broken Arrow tour was a genuine thrill ride. Our jeep took us on trails that I would have hesitated to walk even with the best hiking boots. The first part of this tour took us to Submarine Rock, a long flat rock with a great view.

Coconino Our guide gave us a quick geology lesson on the strata of the rocks in the area.

The short story on rock strata: The red colored strata consist of iron-impregnated sandstone. When exposed to air the iron oxidizes, that is, it rusts. Hence, the red color. Sandstone erodes relatively quickly. The lighter colored strata are limestone. Limestone erodes less quickly. The grayish colored strata at the top of the higher rock formations are basalt, a type of volcanic rock. Basalt erodes relatively slowly and protects the lower rock formations from eroding.
